Reading
Tap the middle of a page to show or hide the reader’s controls. The bar at the bottom holds the buttons this page refers to: Layout for how the comic is laid out, Display for brightness and image filters, Bookmarks, and Panels for panel reading.
Settings for one comic, defaults for all
Section titled “Settings for one comic, defaults for all”Most of what follows can be set in two places. In Settings › Reading you choose the defaults for every comic: Default reader mode, Default reading direction, Default page layout, Default page fit mode and Default cut margins. In the reader, Layout changes them for the comic you are reading only, and ComicDrive remembers that choice for that comic. Reset in the same sheet returns the comic to your defaults.
Pages or webtoon
Section titled “Pages or webtoon”Paged shows one page at a time and turns them like a book. Webtoon shows the pages as one continuous vertical strip that you scroll, the way webtoons and many manhwa are made to be read. Choose it under Reader mode.
Reading direction
Section titled “Reading direction”For manga, set Reading direction to right to left. Pages then turn the other way, and the sides of the screen that go forward and back swap with them.
One page or two
Section titled “One page or two”Page layout decides how many pages the paged reader shows at once. Auto shows two pages side by side on wide tablets and foldables and one page otherwise; covers and pages drawn as a landscape spread stay on their own. Single and Two pages fix the choice.
If a comic’s two-page spreads come out split across the wrong pair, turn on Shift spread pairing for that comic. It pairs the first page with the second so the spreads line up.
Fit, margins and background
Section titled “Fit, margins and background”- Page fit scales each page to the screen: Fit page, Fit width, Fit height or Fill screen. It decides how much you need to zoom or scroll.
- Cut margins finds the empty borders around each page and crops them, so the artwork fills more of the screen. It helps most with scans that have wide white margins.
- Settings › Display › Background color is what shows around a page that doesn’t fill the screen: Black, White, or Dynamic, which takes its colour from the edge of each page.
Turning pages and getting around
Section titled “Turning pages and getting around”Swipe to turn the page. With Settings › Controls › Tap navigation on, a tap on the left or right third of the screen turns it too, and with Settings › Controls › Volume button navigation the volume keys do, for reading one-handed. Drag the page slider at the bottom to jump through the comic, or tap the page number to use Go to page.
At the end of a comic, swiping past the last page offers the next issue, the series, or the way back to the library. All gestures are listed on Gestures and controls.
The reader shows a short guide once for each way of reading: over the first comic you open, and again the first time you read right to left, in webtoon mode, with the page edges or with panels. It goes away with your first tap or swipe. Show reader guide in the Layout sheet shows it again for the comic you are reading; Settings › Controls › Reader guide brings every guide back, starting with the next comic you open.
Zooming
Section titled “Zooming”Double-tap a page to zoom in and again to zoom out, or pinch. (With Double-tap panning on, the second double-tap moves on instead; see below.) While zoomed in, you can keep reading: swipe past the edge of the page and the next one opens at the same zoom, at its top. Swiping back opens the previous page at its bottom.
Settings › Controls › Zoom sensitivity sets how strongly a pinch zooms: higher values make the same finger movement zoom more.
With Settings › Controls › Double-tap panning on, double-tapping a zoomed page walks the view across it step by step and turns to the next page after the last step, so you can read a large page without moving it by hand.
Bookmarks
Section titled “Bookmarks”To bookmark the page you are on, tap the bookmark button in the reader’s top bar. Bookmarks in the reader lists the bookmarks of this comic; each can carry a note and a colour. All bookmarks from all comics are on the Bookmarks list on the Start screen.
Slideshow
Section titled “Slideshow”The slideshow turns the pages by itself. Start it from Layout; it begins once the sheet is closed, and a page you turn yourself gets the full time again. Set how long each page stays under Settings › Controls › Slideshow interval, and turn on Settings › Controls › Slideshow button in the reader bar if you use it often.
Brightness and image filters
Section titled “Brightness and image filters”Display in the reader adjusts how pages look:
- Presets: Sepia, Grayscale, High contrast and Night mode.
- Manual adjustments: Page brightness, Contrast, Saturation, Sharpness and Invert colors; Reset returns them to the defaults.
- Screen brightness overrides the system brightness while you read.
These are not only a matter of taste: high contrast, grayscale, night mode and the brightness controls help with low vision and with sensitivity to light.
Page number and screen
Section titled “Page number and screen”These settings are in Settings › Display; Page number and Screen orientation can also be changed from the reader’s Layout sheet.
- Page number shows your progress at the bottom of the screen while the controls are hidden: Current page, Current page and total, Percentage, or Off.
- Keep screen on stops the display from timing out mid-page; it uses a little more battery during long sessions.
- Fullscreen reading lets pages use the whole screen, including the camera cutout; swipe from the edge to peek at the system bars.
- Screen orientation locks the reader to Portrait or Landscape, or leaves it Free.
